Vytauto Pr. 60

Description

The large five-story residential building with 70 apartments was designed in 1958 and built in 1961. It is unusual that an individual project was prepared for this type of building. A few years later, similar looking apartment buildings in Kaunas, as in other parts of Lithuania, were built only according to the standard designs.

This building has an irregular, "L"-shaped plan, the long part of which is located on Vytautas Avenue, and the short part - on Laisves Boulevard. The architecture of the building is minimalistic, quite ascetic. The rectangular volume, the light-colored plastered and minimalist facade, the laconic division of the exterior with wide rectangular windows illustrate the beginning of Soviet-era modernism in the architecture of Kaunas at that time. From the general appearance of the building, the first floor, which housed the commercial premises, stands out a little. This part of the building consists of showcase windows and a canopy over the premises. To provide more amenities to the residents, it was planned to install children's playgrounds, flower gardens, and even a water pool in the inner courtyard of the building. Although not comparable in architectural quality to the surrounding buildings of the interwar period, this building is an interesting and unique example of early Soviet modernist architecture in Kaunas.
